Josiah D. Moser

I began studying the Classical Guitar with an acquaintance from my church. Rather than beginning with the typical acoustic style, I have been grounded in the Classical technique for as long as I have been playing.

After over a year of study, my friend moved out of town, so I went on to study with Randy Wimer at TCC for a time, and then from Chris Brown at ORU. During this interval, I performed often for my church, several organizations I was involved with, and more notably, a very competitive county-wide performance-based talent competition called "Share-the-Fun" hosted by Tulsa County 4-H. I took first place in this competition 4 out of 5 times I competed (the other time I came in second).

In 2011, I went to compete in the Donna Marie Haire Classical Guitar competition, a division of the larger "Oklahoma Music Olympics" which take place annually at Oklahoma City University. I came in second place playing a Bach Fugue and Albeniz's famous Leyenda. The following year I returned playing Sor's Variations on a Theme of Mozart and Tarrega's Recuerdos de la Alhambra, and I won first place, which included a cash prize and a followup performance. The next week I returned to perform the Tarrega for a crowd of around a thousand. I also repeated the performance at ORU's annual guitar recital.

Upon entering the University of Tulsa's school of music, I began studying with Michael Fowler, and I have never appreciated any instructor more. His insights into the guitar-playing world have been everything one should expect from someone who took a master class with Segovia himself. My technique has greatly improved, and in the spring of 2014, I had my first opportunity to play in a chamber ensemble as I performed Vivaldi's Concerto for Viola d'Amore and Lute with a violin, harpsichord, and cello.

I continue to perform occasionally for my church, and I seek out other opportunities to bring the rich sound of the guitar to as many ears as possible.
