Isabel Gehweiler


Juilliard-trained cellist Isabel Gehweiler is a Prizewinner of the European Artistic Grant, one of the highest European awards for young musicians, previously conferred on artists as violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter and cellist Sol Gabetta, in the main chamber of the Council of Europe in Strasbourg.

Ms Gehweiler has appeared on festivals as the Kronberg Cello Festival, Richard Wagner Festspiele Bayreuth, Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, focus! Festival New York City, Klangspuren Festival Schwaz, Verbier Festival, Lucerne Festival, Impuls Festival Graz and Carl Flesch Academy Baden-Baden.

Since 1994 Ms. Gehweiler has taken part in many regional, national and international competitions both as a soloist and as a member of chamber music groups. She has received numerous first prizes.
Ms Gehweiler is a recepient of the „Kunstpreis“ Artist Award by the Kunstiftung Baden-Württemberg (2011), the „Markgräfler Kulturpreis“ (2012), a scholar of the Richard Wagner Society (2013) and a recipient of scholarships by the Rotary International Foundation, the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service), the Richard Wagner Society, The Juilliard School of Music, Elaine Lambert Scholarship and the Art Foundation Baden-Württemberg.

As a soloist Ms Gehweiler has performed with orchestras including the Warsaw Symphony Orchestra, the LJO Saar, the Akademie-Orchester Mannheim, the Neues Orchester Basel and the Polish Chamber Orchestra.

She has taken masterclasses with Anner Bylsma, Siegfried Palm, Wolfgang Boettcher, Jens-Peter Maintz, Troels Svane, Pieter Wispelwey, the Verdi string quartet, the Auryn string quartet, the London Haydn string quartet, the Klangforum Wien, the Ensemble Modern and Gustav Rivinius.

Ms. Gehweiler works closely with composers, and several new works are dedicated to her. She also composes herself.

Isabel Gehweiler was born into a family of musicians in 1988 and started learning the violin at the age of three. She changed to the cello when she was five years old. From 1997 she studied in Professor Katharina Gohl-Moser's gifted learner class at the junior school of the Basle Music Academy, and took lessons in chamber music from the same teacher. From 2004 she studied with Professor Ivan Monighetti. After receiving her school leaving certificate in 2007, she became a pupil of Professor Gustav Rivinius at the Saar University of Music in Saarbrücken. From 2010 till 2012, Ms Gehweiler studied with Prof. Richard Aaron at The Juilliard School of Music, New York. Since 2013 she is a student of Thomas Grossenbacher at ZHdK where she finished master of specialized performance (soloist) degree in 2015. Since 2015 she is in the master of pedagogy program studying with Thomas Grossenbacher.

Currently Isabel Gehweiler is teaching cello at Hannover Hochschule für Musik, Medien und Theater.
