Bruno Campo


Born in Guatemala, graduated in the University of Performing Arts Graz, Austria. Bruno Campo combines his Latin-American spirit and entrepreneurship with his formation and experience in the central European tradition. Founder and developer of El Sistema Guatemala and diverse Sistema inspired orchestra programs in Europe. A passionate young professional conductor with a present humanistic ethos in his artistic engagement. A visionary and social innovator who has been decorated with the “Rafael Alvarez Ovalle” and “Peace ambassador” medals from the Guatemalan government for his contribution to the art and culture in the country.

Recent highlights include conducting the Aarhus Symphony Orchestra in the opening ceremony of the “European Capital of Culture Aarhus 2017” for Her Majesty Margrethe II Queen of Denmark and European culture politicians, his debut opening the season of the Odense Symphony Orchestra in August 2017, and a successful residency of the Sistema Europe Youth Orchestra 2017 in Athens, conducting the final concert of the Hellenic festival at the breath-taking “Odeon of Herodes Atticus Amphitheater”. Recent master classes include Maestro Daniele Gatti with the Orchestra Giovanile Italiana in Accademia La Chigiana di Siena and Maestro David Zinman with the Tonhalle-Orchestra Zurich.

Upcoming engagements include a re-invitation to conduct the Aarhus Symphony and The Sistema Europe Youth Orchestra Summer camp Birmingham-London 2018.

He has conducted the Aarhus Symfoniorkester, Odense Symfoniorkester, Orkester Norden in a Scandinavian tour, Orkester Midtvest in the Danish renowned festival Klassiske Dage, the Sistema Europe Youth Orchestra and the Youth Orchestra of Caracas in Teatro alla Scala di Milano, the European Campus Orchestra as part of the European Union Youth Orchestra (EUYO) residency at Grafenegg, members of the Vienna Philharmonic in the Opera camp programs of the Wiener Philharmonic Musikvermittlung and the Salzburg Festival, the Municipal Orchestra of Guatemala City, the Filharmonie Hradec Králové Czech, the Savaria Philharmonie, the Gyor Philhamonie in Hungary and others

In 2005, at the age of 22, Bruno was entrusted by the founder of El Sistema Venezuela, Maestro José Antonio Abreu, to build up El Sistema Guatemala. In the course of 6 years, the program reached 2500 children and adolescents active in 10 youth orchestras and diverse ensembles in 8 new music schools, all founded under his leadership. Since 2012, while looking for the roots and knowledge in the Central European music tradition, he initiated and helped developing significant orchestra programs for European Sistema-inspired initiatives, most importantly for Superar Vienna, Superar Suisse, Music for Peace Istanbul and Harmonie Foundation Prague in addition to consulting other similar emerging programs.

In 2013 Bruno co-founded the Sistema Europe Youth Orchestra, a Pan-European orchestra and symbol of a united and solidary Europe that gathers hundreds of young talented musicians and teachers from Sistema Europe’s diverse network of programs from over twenty European countries and other young musicians coming from the traditional music education system in Europe into an orchestra infused with the spirit and values of El Sistema. Past residencies took place in Vienna and Salzburg in 2013, Istanbul 2014, Milan 2015 during the "El Sistema residency" at Teatro alla Scala di Milano and Athens in 2017 at the closing concert of the Hellenic festival Greece.
