Silhouettes Chamber Ensemble


Chamber Ensemble "Silhouettes" gets its name in the summer of 2012 as a result of the cooperation between four young musicians. Members of the ensemble are Kalina Miteva (violin), Kristiyan Kaloyanov (clarinet), Gabriela Kaloyanova (cello) and Lilia Jekova (piano). They work together for five years with the prominent Bulgarian cellist Prof. Ventseslav Nikolov. For these years the musicians has had numerous performances – concerts in Studio 1 of the Bulgarian National Radio, directly broadcast (2011, 2012) concerts at "Akademie am Meer", Sylt, Germany (2013, 2014); concert in Bulgarian Cultural Institute - Budapest (2014); concerts within the "Days of Chamber Music", Gabrovo (2011), the "Fourth Festival of Youth in Art Via Pontica", Balchik (2011,2015); the "Salon des Arts" in National Palace of Culture, Sofia (2012), Austrian music weeks (2013) International Chamber Music Festival, Plovdiv (2014), „March Music Days International Festival, Ruse (2015) and etc.

At the invitation of the Bulgarian NationalRadio, they realized records which presentedBulgaria on the "European Day of Young Musicians" (2011).

The musicians are scholarship students of the International Summer Academy PragWienBudapest (ISA 2012, 2013), where they won the Special Award („Förderpreis”) of ISA13 and studied with Hatto Beyerle, Johannes Meissel, Avedis Kouyoumdjian, Peter Nagy, Petr Prause, Miguel da Silva, Evgenia Epshtein, Sharon Kam and etc. They also worked with prof. Saschko Gawriloff at Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival Masterclasses in Lubeck, Germany (2015)

In 2014 Chamber Ensemble “Silhouettes” realized their debut project “Contrasts” – a cycle of two concerts, supported by the Ministry of Culture, Bulgaria and the National Culture Fund.

In 2015-2016 Silhouettes ensemble is one of the initiators of the annual „Sofia Chamber Music Festival Agitato” which take place at the Bulgarian National Radio.

Youths and the idea of eternity

Quartet for the end of time from Olivier Messiaen didn't appear to be meaningfully problematic for Chamber ensemble "Silhouettes". From the ensemble's biography I get to remember that they work together since 2008. This year they had a wonderful concert in the "March music days" festival in Ruse, where they played with their professor and mentor prof. Venceslav Nikolov. His huge contribution in the building of the ensemble I see mostly in the "teaching of the meaning". The complicated metaphysical concept of the quartet was "told" to the audience with a rare instrumental sensitivity. (…) Having in mind the time and the place of the making of the piece, perhaps it is not wondrous that the piece is inspired of a quote from the Apocalypses. Today the young musicians reminded of its topicality. They smartly and precisely expressed the idea of eternity, of the timeless light, of the immortality of the mortal. They were listening to the voice of the composer, in his special rhythms out of any beat, which help to get away from time. (...) Every one of the quartet used perfectly their chance to express his or hers insights on "now and beyond": The clarinetist Kristiyan Kaloyanov in his solo movement "The abyss of the birds" with mat shades sound and a very concentrated, cumulate, focused tone, Gabriela Kaloyanova with Lilia Jekova (remarkable piano arsenal) in "Praise of The eternal Jesus" with almost straight, retracted, strongly catching with modesty sound, or the violinist Kalina Miteva in the final "Praise of Jesus's immortality" with the exciting singing of the beautiful melody over the repeating rhythmical figure of the piano with creeping harmony… One more important step of the "Sillhouettes" on the road of the musical temple of the ХХ century.

Concert of Chamber Ensemble "Silhouettes" - A bright ray in the extincted cultural reality ...

I gave up the condescending tone and wishes with regard to the young "Silhouettes". Long since establishing the ensemble I watch closely their manifestations and the sense of hope in their early concerts, accompanied by admiration and expectation of success, has become a confident finding of their visible undisputed rise and growth....

...In the performance of "Silhouettes" is missing that harmful, deliberate and irritating exaltation, evidence of awkwardness and bad taste which gives a distorted image of the musical ideas. On the contrary, with excellent measured emotion, colored with true artistic inspiration, they reveal the clarity of form and the author's thought, they suggests to the listener, whoever he is, the beauty of wonderful performed music and bring him a natural spiritual joy. That makes them already very serious artists and the "silhouettes" turns into a dense, bright figures in a desirable dream landscape of the Bulgarian musical life.
