Laura Schwendinger


The first composer to win the prestigious Berlin Prize Fellowship, Professor of Composition at UW Madison and Artistic Director of the Contemporary Ensemble there, was born in Mexico City. Her music has been performed by leading artists of our day including Dawn Upshaw (on tour 1997-2003), the Arditti Quartet, the JACK quartet, Jennifer Koh, the International Contemporary Ensemble, Janine Jansen, Christopher Taylor, Eighth Blackbird, the New Juilliard Players, the American Composers Orchestra and the Franz Liszt Chamber Orchestra of Hungary; At venues including Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, Alice Tully at Lincon Center, Wigmore Hall, the Berlin Philharmonie, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the Theatre du Chatalet the Tangelwood, Ojai and Aspen Music Festivals. Honors many honors include a Guggenheim, Koussevitzky and Fromm, Radcliffe Institute Advanced Studies at Harvard, Copland House, Harvard Musical Association, MacDowell, Yaddo, and the Rockefeller Bellagio Center, two from the American Academy of Arts and Letters- Goddard Leiberson Fellowship, and given to “mid-career composers of exceptional gifts”, Ives, and first-prize of the ALEA III Competition.
