biography

Born in Singapore to Dutch and Chinese American parents, Mats, now 17, has been singing since he was a toddler, mostly in the shower. He joined the school choir from 5th grade onwards at the Singapore American School, performing in various school musicals and concerts. He performed at the Love Gala in February 2014, a charity event organized by Singapore Music Impresario Dick Lee.

Mats started opera training in 2013. He attended Boston University Tanglewood Institute’s summer youth program in 2014 and performed at various Tanglewood events including solo recital, opera scenes and as part of the youth choir at John Williams/Boston Pops’ Film Night concert.

Mats is currently studying Voice at Walnut Hill School for the Arts, a performing arts high school in Boston affiliated with the New England Conservatory (NEC). He trains and performs with NEC’s Youth Choir, most recently singing Handel’s Messiah at Jordan Hall and Mahler’s 2nd Symphony at MIT.

Despite his short stint in opera, Mats won first place for Classical Music for 16-18 at the National Association of Teachers for Singing (NATS) Massachusetts State in October 2014.

Mats studied with Professor Stephen West, Head of Voice Dept at University of Michigan, this summer at the Bel Canto Institute in Florence, Italy as one of nine high school students selected globally. Bel Canto is affiliated with the Metropolitan Opera of New York. He was also accepted to the Curtis Institute Summer Opera program.

Mats comes from an artistic/musical family. His uncle Henry Lai is an award winning composer for film music based in Hong Kong. His father enjoys playing the piano/organ and his brother loves to paint. Mats speaks Dutch and basic Mandarin and Japanese. He holds both American and Dutch/EU citizenship and has travelled widely across Asia, Europe and North America. Besides classical music, Mats also loves jazz and alternative music. He plays the piano and is learning electric guitar.
