Peter Ovtcharov


Peter Ovtcharov is one of the most inspired and prominent musicians and piano pedagogues of his generation.

He was born into an artistic family in Russia in 1981; and at an early age he entered The Academy for Gifted Children in St. Petersburg – a legendary school that has produced talents such as Grigory Sokolov, Valery Gergiev, Gidon Kremer and many others. He later graduated from the Mozarteum University of Salzburg, where he studied with the renowned German teacher, Karl-Heinz Kaemmerling.

He has performed as a soloist, and as a soloist with orchestra, in the most prestigious concert halls of Europe and Asia. He has appeared at the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory, the Golden Hall of the Vienna Musikverein, the Tokyo Opera City Hall, the Kirov Theater, the Mozarteum Great Hall, the Rudolfinum of Prague, and the Seoul Art Center.

He has won prizes and awards, including the Second Prize of the International Vladimir Krainev Competition in Kharkiv, Ukraine (1992), the Silver Medal of the 3rd International Tchaikovsky Competition for Young Musicians (1997), the First Prize of the National Austrian competition, “Gradus ad Parnassum” (2004), the Silvio Bengalli Piano Prize (Italy, 2004), and the Third Prize of the International Beethoven Competition in Vienna (2005). In 2006, he received the Luitpold Prize, “Artist of the Year”, from the prestigious German festival, “Kissinger Sommer”.

In addition to concert activities as a soloist, he has performed chamber music with eminent musicians such as Adrian Brendel, Michael Collins, Wen-Sinn Yang. He has also recorded CDs in cooperation with Bavarian radio in Munich, Germany.

Peter started his pedagogical activities very early, even before completing his final studies – as, in 2008, he was invited to be Professor and Artist in Residence at the International Chamber Music Festival, “Allegro-Vivo” at Horn, Austria. He continues his annual master classes there, to this day. In 2010, he became the youngest full-time piano professor in South Korea. As one of the most sought after piano pedagogues of his generation, he gives numerous master classes and lectures in Korea, Japan, Taiwan, China, Austria, France and Russia. He serves as a jury member at competitions, and his students have won national and international prizes, and have entered leading music universities throughout the world. Since 2015, Peter Ovtcharov has been chosen to be cultural ambassador of the Moscow Tchaikovsky Foundation in Korea. He is also jury chairman of pre-selections for the IX Tchaikovsky Competition for Young Musicians in Seoul.

He has recently been appointed Professor of Yonsei University, one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in Korea. He performs on all major concert stages in Korea, and his concerts there have been recorded and broadcast by such TV channels as SBS, MBC, YTN and ARTE.
