Rosanna Butterfield

The daughter of two opera singers, Rosanna Butterfield began private cello lessons and ballet classes at the age of five, and dreamed of becoming a ballerina. When her family immigrated to Vancouver, Canada, in 2001, she started cello lessons with Judith Fraser, who inspired her to pursue a career in music. Rosanna attended Rice University's Shepherd School of Music, where she studied with Norman Fischer. She graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree, cum laude, in May 2012.
Now a third-year Cello Fellow with the New World Symphony, Miss Butterfield has participated in many community outreach activities. She has travelled to Medellín, Colombia twice to teach at Academia Filarmónica de Medellín as part of NWS' exchange program. In the summer of 2014, Miss Butterfield traveled to Amman, Jordan with Music for Life International, where she worked with Syrian refugees at Za'atari camp. When she's not busy practicing or lying on the beach, she can be found reading, baking, watching movies or singing along to Ella Fitzgerald songs.

Germanic Severity and Russian Power at the NWS
2014-10-20 Miami Clasica, Miami
"La intensidad de los dos primeros movimientos cedió ante el lirismo del andante liderado por el cello de Rosanna Butterfield y la evocación de la canción Immer leiser wird mein Schlummer marcando el momento mas bello y substancioso de la velada.

English Translation:

The intensity of the first two movements yielded to the lyricism of the andante, led by cellist Rosanna Butterfield, and the evocation of the song Immer leiser wird mein Schlummer, marking the most beautiful and satisfying moment of the evening.

IlluminArts concert
Footage from a concert at the Bass Museum of Art in Miami Beach, with IlluminArts on September 12th, 2014

"IlluminArts is Miami's new Art Song and Vocal Chamber Music concert series, presenting events in Museums and Galleries in South Florida. We choose the repertoire for our concerts based on the visual artists' vision, work, and process, so that the music and the art illuminate each other."

Schubert fares best in New World’s chamber program
2014-11-17 South Florida Classical Review, Miami Bend
"[T]here was a wonderfully subtle interplay between instruments in a vibrant reading of Schubert’s Quintet in A Major. Cellist Rosanna Butterfield’s supple phrasing and singing tone blended mellifluously with Derek Mosloff’s viola."

Brahms with MTT, New World Symphony
2014-10-18 South Florida Classical Review, Miami
" In the Andante, Rosanna Butterfield phrased the opening cello solo warmly with rounded tone. Bronfman here gave the melodies space, capturing Brahms’ romantic sensibility. In the final reprise of the soaring principal theme, piano, cello and winds were perfectly balanced."
