An Orange Dot in the Classical Music World - Bettina Mehne

It is about time to do an Orange Twist with our very own Bettina Mehne, co-founder of HELLO STAGE, and a wonderful soul behind it from day one! Just heading back form New York to Berlin, Vienna and Madrid, we caught her for this quick interview. And do not forget to pre-order the upcoming book, Be Your Own Agent, which she is currently writing with Bernhard!

1. We all know HELLO STAGE’s favorite color! What is yours?

Actually it’s grey… but I like to add a little colour! Generally baby pink… and a bit of orange since a few years, but also very found of blue and green! [We wonder why ;)]

2. What is the best advice a teacher or mentor has ever given you?

„Anything said 1 hour before and after a concert should not be taken too seriously…“ I should add, said by an artist… something worth remembering by anyone working on the administrative side of a concert. That of course does not mean that they should neglect the artist - rather the opposite, I strongly believe that anyone going on stage should be looked after extremely well - just take a few things which might happen lightheartedly.

3. Is making music still part of your life?

Making music myself not and I guess my neighbours are grateful for that. Last century I played the cello and tried taking singing lessons. But sometimes I think picking up the cello again would be fun, but such hard work…

4. How much time should musicians spend on the business side of their career every day?

Not so sure that every day is necessary, but certainly a fair amount of time every week. That’s not only on Social media, HELLO STAGE and alike but going to concerts and networking by going backstage, introducing themselves etc.

5. What is the most important trait of a successful artist in today’s world?

The most important trait is to be able to tell a story - their own story. It might take a little time to figure out what this but this is what makes them unique, interesting and stick out. Nobody has the same story than you, so make sure you find ways to communicate it. It is what you will be remembered by even before someone heard you play.

6. Coffee or tea? And your most favorite place for it?

Both! I love an early morning Earl Grey but will switch to coffee during the day. Right now I am in New York City so I love popping into Zibetto, in Vienna I like the Kaffeefabrik in the 4th district, but generally I would say my favorite place for coffee is Italy!!

7. The next project/concert/event you are really looking forward to?

The next project I am greatly looking for is the book Bernhard and I are writing being released. It is a great journey writing it and it will no doubt feel amazing having the first copy in hand -> Be Your Own Agent.

The next event is the conference of all the Orchestras in Spain coming together in Madrid at the end of the month where I have been asked to speak and take part in a panel discussion end of November -> AEOS Conference.

Next concert … two which I am going to miss … the Ensemble Lux is performing at the Austrian Cultural Forum in NYC at the same time Edwin Cahill and Matthew Patrick Morris are putting a concert about the Flemish perspective of WW1 at the Morgan Library… but I will be up in the air flying back to Berlin.
