A Jazzy Summer Night with Baroque Elegance

While searching through various recordings to find the perfect one for a late summer day I came across a rather unusual combination – the Suite for Flute and Jazz Trio by Claude Bolling. Born in Cannes at the French Riviera Bolling was a jazz pianist himself who played with and was friends of Lionel Hampton, Oscar Peterson and many others. He also wrote the music for over one hundred films.
But he also ventured into classical music and a very personal cross over genre. His more classical works were played by Jean-Pierre Rampal, Pinchas Zukerman, Maurice André, Yo-Yo Ma and many others. His Suite for Flute and Jazz Piano has quickly attracted a great audience. It is a unique mixture of Baroque elegance, jazzy swings, and moody tunes.

Our founding member Jasmine Choi recorded Bolling’s suite for Sony in 2012 together with Sam Minaie, Nathaniel Smith and Hugh Sung.
