Listening to Falstaff

It was a long and joyful discussion about favorite recordings today with Maestro Pablo Mielgo. Actually, he does not have any favorite recordings. So it was hard to pin him down to suggest an album for this week’s column.
We ended up discussing his upcoming performances. He will conduct Gustav Mahler’s third symphony with his orchestra, the Orquestra Simfònica Illes Balears in October. In November follows Giuseppe Verdi’s Falstaff in Mallorca and Minorca. When he prepares new repertoire he actually does not listen to full recordings. He believes that a conductor needs to be able to hear the music when reading a score.

In the end of our discussion stood two Falstaff recordings, Claudia Abbado conducting the Berlin Philharmonic with Bryn Terfel in the main role and James Levine at the Metropolitan Opera. Faced with the task to just select one recording we agreed on the Abbado one.

So, our suggestion as Recording of the Week is Giuseppe Verdi’s Falstaff. Enjoy!
