Meet Maestro Pablo Mielgo
The Balearic Islands are more known as a holiday destination than for its classical music. Some might be surprised to find a symphony orchestra there the Orquestra Simfònica Illes Balears
. They will be even more surprised to hear it! It is a great orchestra with a fantastic season bringing many wonderful soloists to the islands, including many HELLO STAGE members
. Last season Julian Rachlin, Gabriela Montero, Michel Camilo
and many others came to perform with the orchestra. Start tenor Juan Diego Flórez
even asked the orchestra to perform a gala concert with him at the world famous Golden Hall of the Musikverein in Vienna
That was not always the case. This is thanks to two friends who became the artistic leadership of the orchestra, Pablo Mielgo and Joji Hattori
. Our Artist of the Week, Maestro Pablo Mielgo
, made it his priority to make the orchestra relevant again not only on the Balearic Islands but in Europe. He wanted his musician friends to enjoy playing with the orchestra. So he has worked tirelessly over the last two years increasing the quality of the orchestra and motivating the musicians of the orchestra. The result is astonishing. Many cannot believe that this is the same orchestra they heard a few years ago.
Pablo Mielgo and the Orquestra Simfònica Illes Balears have a great season ahead of them. Among the works they will present is a Beehoven 9th Symphony, a Verdi Requiem but also French and Russian music. Plans of a new concert hall in Palma de Mallorca are in the working. The orchestra has invitations to Madrid and Paris.
But Pablo Mielgo always makes time to work with young musicians in Colombia and around the world. He is Art Program Director of the SaludArte Foundation in Miami and continues to contact opera regularly.
