Gabriela Montero - Ex Patria
debut orchestral recording rejoins an age-old tradition of the pianist as composer and improviser.
Both a personal lament and the collective protest of censored voices, Montero's "Ex Patria" reveals the tragic truth of a Venezuelan homeland ravaged by societal collapse. A tone poem and musical polemic, it brutally unearths the contemporary Venezuelan social narrative of unprecedented homicide, criminality, human rights abuses and the wholesale theft of a society at the hands of a narco-dictatorship.
It is accompanied by the the beloved Piano Concerto No.2 of Rachmaninov, a pianist and composer whose own political exile resonates profoundly in Montero's affections.
Three improvisations conclude the recording, each composed and recorded spontaneously in homage to the improvisational practices of the Classical masters.
Carlos Miguel Prieto conducts the YOA Orchestra of the Americas in this LIVE recording. The album was released released on Orchid Classics
The album won a Grammy for "Best Classical Album" at the 2015 Latin Grammy
