Trio Immersio

We talk to the lovely ladies from Trio Immersio this week - united by their love of Viennese chamber music ( and coffee) say hello to violinist Vira Zhuk, cellist Anna Maria Niemec and pianist Mariam Vardzelashvili!

We all know HELLO STAGE’s favorite color! What’s yours?

Vira: Our favorite color is deep blue - the name of our trio comes from the word 'Immersion' that we associate with deep waters. In our case we meant an immersion unto the depths of the piano trio repertoire :)

What was the best advice a teacher ever gave you?

Anna Maria: It had to have been Menahem Pressler, who told us to always remain honest with ourselves.

How has your practice changed with time?

Mariam: It became more efficient, polished, precise.

With the piano trio, our work together evolves in the direction of bringing out new depths of harmonic colors, and being as exact with the written text as possible.

What do you think is the most important trait of a successful artist in today’s modern world?

Anna Maria: One has to stay current.

Nowadays, musicians are expected to be good at keeping up with numerous things such as technology and social media. Amidst it all, it is still extremely important not to lose your artistic goals.

How much time do you spend every day on Facebook, twitter, and which other ways do you use to promote yourself?

Vira: We spend many hours a week connecting with our fan-base through various sources.

From the very beginning Facebook was our main social media outlet. It still is. But we are also using Instagram and Hello Stage, of course.

How did you meet and decide to start playing together?

Mariam: We all met during our studies at the MUK in Vienna. It is very common to do a lot of chamber music projects during your studies, but we all felt the urge to do something more substantial than several rehearsals and performances with one group.

Vira: We had a lot of respect for each other before we started playing together but it was still an experiment early on, to see how well we could connect and how much dedication we could show for the group.

Anna Maria: It's now been almost three years, and I think it's safe to say that we've become a family :)

Your focus lies in Viennese chamber music - tell us more!

Mariam: Our artistic mission is to explore the Viennese repertoire through the prism of time and space.

That means we are starting at the very beginnings of the genre, with the J.Haydn piano trios and following the development of the repertoire through the classical, romantic eras and all the way up until our days.

It is fascinating to see how the writing for different instruments evolved over time, as well as the fact that the piano trio managed to move from a house concert performance setting all the way onto big stage.

What are you working on at the moment?

Vira: May has two important dates coming up for us - on May 18th, our concert at the Schoenberg Center in Vienna, and on May 25th, the official starting date of our crowdfunding campaign for our debut CD titled '3'.

We are going to record Viennese repertoire only and will include works from three centuries by J. Haydn, J. Brahms, F. Schubert and B. Gander. 3 musicians, 3 aesthetics, 3 centuries.

Vienna is famous for its coffee culture - where is your favorite place to tank up on some inspiration?

Anna Maria: All three of us are really into coffee. What we like to do is purchase coffee beans when travelling, grinding them ourselves and exploring the different tastes in the comfort of our homes or the rehearsal studio.

However, if we were to chose a cafe in the city it would have to be 'Josephbrot'.
