Yulia Deyneka

It is our pleasure to talk to the wonderful Russian violist Yulia Deyneka, Principal Violist of the Staatskapelle Berlin, this week!

We all know HELLO STAGE’s favorite color! What’s yours?

I love white and green.

What was the best advice a teacher ever gave you?

Never stop asking questions. Right questions are more important than the right answers.

How has your practice changed with time?

It became much more time limited, therfore more productive.

What do you think is the most important trait of a successful artist in today’s modern world?

It depends on what you mean with the expression „successful artist“.

A goal of an artist cannot be anything else but self-expression. If an artist is driven by a need to be liked by the others, he will only produce an imitation of art.

How much time do you spend every day on Facebook, twitter, and which other ways do you use to promote yourself?

As little as possible. I use facebook just for practical reasons of communication. Of course, I have my own website, if it is a self-promotion so be it.

I like HELLOSTAGE because you are not obliged to make posts in order to get some kind of rating or likes.

Tell us more about your upcoming concert, the Brahms Cycle at the Berliner Philharmonie...

This cycle is a unique possibility to listen to all chamber works of Brahms in 8 concerts.

Brahms's music is not only unbelievably beautiful and expresses nearly all possible human emotions, but it is also very complex and intellectual.

Brahms was lonely for most of his life, probably that'́s why the core of his artistic work lies in chamber music - the most intimate form of instrumental music.

What makes Brahms special for you?

Every time I get in touch with any piece by Brahms I get overwhelmed by the depth of the emotions his music evokes. It’s like he would talk to me through his music, telling me about myself.

Do you have a favorite place to have coffee and grab some inspiration in Berlin?

I love to walk alongside the Spree or at one of the countless lakes of Berlin. This is for me the best way to make some „Ordnung“ in my mind.

I take coffee mostly around the corner of the Schiller Theater, where the Staatsoper has been based since some years.
