Summer Festivals Part XII - HELLO STAGErs and their Festivals!

It’s time to look at the members who have their own festivals as well as festivals who are members of our community!

Gülsin Onay can already relax and look back to an extremely successful Gümüşlük Festival 2015 before she starts her busy season in October which will see concerts in Turkey, the UK and Luxembourg. The festival and it’s Festival Academy is held in the small fishing village of Gümüşlük on the south west coast of Turkey as well as the nearby hotels and restaurants and various venues around the Bodrum peninsula every summer since 2004. In 2013 the festival gained an additional venue: the magnificent Ancient Stone Quarry in Koyunbaba, one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Of course the audience had the pleasure to hear Artistic advisor Gülsin Onay in recital in the breathtaking venue. Visiting Artists included the Kronos Quartett and HELLO STAGErs Trio KlaViS and Anika Vavic (see our cover photo).

It was the debut in Turkey for the Trio KlaViS. Their pianist Sabina grew up in this country so it was even more special for them to play there. Miha - their sax - had arranged a folk tune from the area in honor of the festival to complete their exciting programme. Now the busy Trio is already preparing for another big debut on their list: in October they are going to perform in Germany for the first time and they are starting big at the Gasteig in Munich!

Anika Vavic did not only gave a recital but joined in the Festival Academy, teaching in a masterclass for several days. Speaking of debuts - Anika’s upcoming season will also see some of those as she is hitting up North to conquer Scotland together with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. She is also looking forward to work with the Hessische Rundfunk in Frankfurt am Main and to return to the Wiener Konzerthaus, this time together with the ORF RSO Wien under the baton of young conductor Mirga Grazinyte-Tyla who has just been promoted from Dudamel fellow to Associated Conductor of the LA Phil.

The festival is also hosting a piano competion and we ar happy to welcome it’s participants Ecem Alniacik and Oyku Melis Sahin to HELLO STAGE!

The Icelandic-American violinist Judith Ingolfsson has aslo found a wonderful spot of the world to start her festival „Aigues-vives en Musique“ each August. It is situated between Montpellier and Nîmes in beautiful France. Together with Vladimir Stoupel she has created a hole lot of different concerts including a folle journee, open rehearsals as well as masterclasses in their own Academy. Stefan Fehlandt and Stephan Forck - both members of the Vogler Quarett were to be found amongst the teachers (as well actively taking part in the festival concerts). Keep an eye out for applying for the Masterclasses for 2016 - you will get a lot out of it! Not only daily courses but also you will have the opportunity to perform in public daily, enlarge your repertoire and perform in the festival orchestra.

In the Plymouth State University we find Donato Cabera’s festival - the Music Director of the Las Vegas Philharmonic also is the Artistic Director of the New Hampshire Music Festival. It’s 63rd season has been titled „American Landscapes“, which it explored in Orchestral and Chamber Music concerts. You could have even seen the „The Wizard of Oz“ in an orchestral concert! Sadly the festival already came to an end and Donato is off back to California, opening the Season in Las Vegas and returning to the San Francisco Symphony Youth Orchestra
The International Chamber Music Festival Joaquín Turina is taking place for the 5th time at the beginning of September in Sevilla, Spain. Artistic director Benedicte Palko’s aim is to introduce the Andalusian cultural heritage to their audience through he chamber music works by the Sevillen composer Joaquín Turina. The concerts are taking place in some of Seville’s most historical buildings, among them the celebrated church the House of the Family Salinas and the informal "Bar Carbonería", the famous Capitanía General at Plaza de España with its treasure of a concert hall, is opened to the public especially for the Festival, the home of the Consulate of Portugal, and as well the concert hall in the Fundacion Cajasol. But the festival’s residence and rehearsal space, where the masterclasses also take place, is the Conservatory Cristobal de Morales. We are happy to spot Esther Hoppe amongst the artists taking part and are wishing her, as well as everybody else and the festival staff, toi toi toi / in bocca lupo / break a leg / merde and ¡Buena suerte!
