Summer Festivals Part XI - Come To Marlboro Country

By now you should have a great voerview of what happenend where in the world of classical music festivals this summer!

When I was a kid there were still advertisements for cigarettes in cinemas - that particular brand had a catchy cowboy tune and guys on horseback gathering around the fire at night… Well truth is, the one and only real Marlboro is nothing like that and they have to excuse this terrible pun quoting the New Yorker Magazine who describes it as „the classical world’s most convented retreat“ is much more appropriate!

Marlboro Music is widely acclaimed as the world’s foremost center for leadership training in music. For seven weeks each summer, exceptional young musicians and master artists come together to form a closely-knit family on the campus of Marlboro College in Vermont. Artistic Director Mitsuko Uchida, her senior artist colleagues and the resident musicians enjoy this unique opportunity to rehearse works with ideal conditions and unlimited time as well as sharing the inspired results of their intensive collaborations with their audience on five weekends of public performances. This summer we find three HELLO STAGErs amongst the participants. Cellist Isang Enders, the wonderful Kim Kashkashian and clarinetist Narek Arutyunian

A few years ago Berlin based violinist Viviane Hagner was amongst the young musicians. This not only led to many more great summers in Vermont, but also sparked the idea to create a Marlboro inspired festival as well as forming an ensemble of renown musicians together with their younger pears in Krzyżowa, Poland - a place that like no other stands for exchange of thoughts, culture and the European ideal. To quote Viviane: „Inspired by the many summers I spent at the Marlboro Music School and Festival (…) as well as by my activity on the Advisory Board of the Freya von Moltke Foundation, I discovered Krzyżowa to be the perfect place for such a chamber music festival in Europe. I am delighted that a number of my colleagues, including seniors of Marlboro, are joining me to make this new European music project possible.“ Please take some time and read more about the history of the place and it’s significant role on the festival’s website.

We are thrilled to welcome this exceptional group, Krzyowa Music on HELLO STAGE! Krzyżowa-Music juniors and seniors started studying and rehearsing on August 14th and can be discovered in concerts from August 20th onwards - and not only in Krzyzowa itself. Krzyżowa-Music takes selected juniors and seniors for guest performances in Poland and Germany, among others to the Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Rheingau Music Festival, Berlin and Hamburg. You can find all details on their profile - programmes will be complemented with additional works, the selection of which will be announced shortly before each concert.

And a few individual HELLO STAGERs are to be found amongst the members of this wonderful groupe - Narek Arutyunian is coming straight from Marlboro! The Armenian musician has studied at the Moscow State Conservatory before he joined The Juilliard School in New York. He is a a Winner of the 2010 Young Concert Artists International Auditions and has appeared with orchestras including the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra of Moscow Radio as well as already performed in recital and chamber music around the world.

The Ukrainian-born violinist Andrej Bielow is not only the primarius of the Szymanowski Quartet but also a renown soloist who has appeared with the New Japan Philharmonic, Orchestra National de Radio France, NDR Radiophilharmonie, Sinfonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks to name a few. Andrej also holds a teaching position at the University of Music and Drama, Hanover and the Royal Academy of Music in London, on top regularly gives masterclasses in Europe, Asia and USA.

21 year-old violist Karolina Errera is studying in Berlin. She already has established herself as an international musician and is an alumni of the Verbier, Pablo Casals, Heidelberger Frühling Festival, Seiji Ozawa, and Kronberg Academy. Her Chamber music partners so far included Torleif Thedéen, Gidon Kremer, Christian Tetzlaff, and Steven Isserlis.

Tamàs Pàlfalvi choose the trumpet as his instrument by chance: there was no place in the percussion class at the music school in Salgótarján left. He is now finishing his master’s degree at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest. He has performed as a soloist with the Budapest Festival Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the American Symphony Orchestra, and the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra and participated in various international music festivals.

Matthias Schorn - one of the seniors of the Krzyowa Music - is the principal clarinet of the Vienna Philharmonic. He has appeared as a soloist with his colleagues as well as many of the world’s orchestras and is keen chamber musician. His regular partners in crime are Christoph Eschenbach, Daniel Hope, Benjamin Schmid, Martin Grubinger, Daniel Müller-Schott, the Faurè and the Minetti Quartet, Quatuor Ebene, the Danish String Quartet and the Apollon Musagete. He also has a love for the Alpine folk music, which is the tradition of his native region.

Violinist Stephen Waarts who recently got worldwide recognition, having won both Audience Prizes at the 2015 Queen Elizabeth Competition, is looking ahead to a busy season 15/16 including recitals in New York and Boston. He too is a Winner of the Young Concert Artists International Auditions.

We wish the ensemble toi toi toi for the festival and their tour! And remember after the festival is before the festival - they will be looking for new juniors for the 2016 edition!
