We all know HELLO STAGE’s favorite color! What’s yours?
Duck egg colour at the moment.
What was the best advice a teacher ever gave you?
Embrace your roots.
How has your practice changed with time?
While my musical essence has stayed the same, its character has changed. It has become more raw and intense.
What do you think is the most important trait of a successful artist in today’s modern world?
To remain being you is the most important thing, and often the hardest thing. Equally, a successful artist in today's modern world has to be entrepreneurial (while I can rarely pronounce the word) and form partnerships to grow his/her audience.
How much time do you spend every day on Facebook, twitter, and which other ways do you use to promote yourself?
I've been advised to use Facebook and Twitter very often to promote my work. Youtube has become increasingly important as are platforms such as HelloStage.
Tell us more about Ensemble Zar! :)
Ensemble Zar is a rare breed of an ensemble in the UK that is comprised of up to 14 of the UK’s finest musicians. It is a fresh and fearless cross-genre ensemble whose mission is to express the Middle Eastern artistic temperament in its rawest form, and experiment with new sounds in the process. Under my direction, Zar boasts extraordinary versatility, as its musicians are well-versed in both Eastern and Western idioms, and equally at home performing complex written contemporary music as well as arrangements of the world’s traditional musics. Zar’s musicians are also masters of improvisation, relishing in the spontaneous nature of Oriental music.
What inspires you?
It depends how open I am to inspiration. The most inspiring things can enter your life when you're most closed. They include the a spectrum of the most banal towards the wonderful things from a tap dripping, nature, a stranger's smile, going to a gallery towards the absurdities of life-happenings that you would normally happen in movies and they happen in your own living room!
When you are not creating music, you are...
...at a coffee shop watching the world go by.
