We at HELLO STAGE love singers. You probably know that Bernhard’s first career was being a singer himself and of course I had the pleasure of choosing lots of wonderful singers for projects with the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen as well as at my time at the Konzerthaus which had a Lied recital series, Choral works as well as Opera in concert at our time there (and here’s a confession…I even had singing lessons once as well, ..ahhhh… no no no… but it was important to me, as I wanted to learn more about how it all works. I think that is vital to at least have an inkling when working with singers, even when you are pretty hopeless yourself!)

But that is not the only one reason why we decided to make June our special month for Singers!

SongFest one of our members, is having their festival this month. SongFest is the United States' premier art song festival but also an amazing training program held each summer at The Colburn School in Los Angeles. They attract an international roster of leading recital artists and pedagogues as well as students from some of the nation's top music conservatories. Their audience enjoys a vibrant concert series that is entirely free to the public, and auditors can attend daily masterclasses and lectures led by some the most exciting artists of today.

All this is organized by the wonderful Executive Director Rosemary Ritter together with her two Associated Artistic Directors Liza Stepanova and Matthew Patrick Morris (pictured above - together with Kathleen Tagg).

Matthew is also giving a masterclass at the young artist programme again this summer. He very kindly offered a Skype session each for three singers who join HELLO STAGE this month. We will have a draw at the end of the month and will get in touch with the selected ones. Have a look at his Orange Twist and you will already get an idea of who you will meet.

Of course you all have your teachers you regularly work with - but I am sure you all agree that it is wonderful to get a different perspective on something sometimes. A fresh view from someone you have not sung to before. Or maybe if you’d prefer, he can give you a wonderful insight on how things work in the US if you are from another part of the world… I am sure the three lucky ones will make wonderful use of the time together (we will leave it to you guys to set a time and date with Matt once we have connected you via email. He is off to Israel soon for Poulenc’s Mamelles de Tiresias, but I am sure, you will work it out together).

And thank you ever so much for your extremely kind offer to do this, Matt - we are most grateful that you are spreading the #classicalbuzz this time not only online but face to face with our fellow members! I can’t wait to find out who they will be and of course we want screen shots!

PS - if you would like to find out more about SongFest, thinking that might be something for you and next summer, why not connect with the SONGFEST'ers who are already HELLO STAGE'rs as well? The following just signed up, so bare with them doing their profiles, they are busy singing at the moment! Melanie Henley Heyn, Maayan Goldenfeld, Anna Kovach, Bernice Austin, Katherine Bruton, David Tahere, Rami Sarieddine, Nathan Harris, Kyle Adam Blair.

To the rest of you at SongFest: make use of our special offer and join the #classicalbuzz!!!!!

PPS - teaching over the internet is not new at all - Pinchas Zukerman is a veteran, he started right at the beginning when Skype was invented. I had the pleasure of listening to him talking about it at the 2013 IAMA conference - we are lucky that now the connections are so much more reliable! Another pair of HELLO STAGE'rs are very much involved in it too. Go and check out Eric Silberger and his www.jukubox.com (or) & Marianne Dumas and The Cellopractice Helper .
