Berenice Christin and Philomela Eva Terwey
WE ALL KNOW HELLO STAGE’S FAVORITE COLOR! WHAT’S YOURS?
: My favorite color is red. Berenice
: Mine is blue.
WHAT WAS THE BEST ADVICE A TEACHER EVER GAVE YOU?
Listen to yourself.
HOW HAS YOUR PRACTICE CHANGED WITH TIME?
Well, our classical concert show „Terweys Visual Classic“ joins classical music, visuals as large stage set projections, dramatic art, and dramaturgy. Therefore, practising does not mean anymore „just“ practising our instruments and rehearsing the musical part, but also practising all dramaturgical processes of our stage performance.
Besides, we are also working with an actor as well as with a technical team (video and lighting operators, stage managers etc.) Together with them, we „practise“ all steps of our concert show so that everything of our concept is realized in that way we have in our mind.
WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE MOST IMPORTANT TRAIT OF A SUCCESSFUL ARTIST IN TODAY’S MODERN WORLD?
HOW MUCH TIME DO YOU SPEND EVERY DAY ON FACEBOOK, TWITTER, AND WHICH OTHER WAYS DO YOU USE TO PROMOTE YOURSELF?
We have accounts on youtube, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, lately on Instagram and HELLO STAGE, and like sharing and exchanging with fans and followers. But, we do not plan a fixed time budget for daily social media presence. The one of us who has just got time is active in our social media channels.
It is very comfortable and time-saving that we can share and spread content to many other platforms via HELLO STAGE.
WHEN DID YOU REALISE THAT THE CONCEPT OF A "USUAL" CLASSICAL CONCERT WAS NOT ENOUGH FOR YOU ARTISTIC VISION?
Whilst playing we have our own pictures and visions in our mind. So, we create by ourselves the visuals for each composition of our classical concert show out of our fantasy. They are emotion turned into pictures, a mirror of our feelings we experience in music. In this manner, we communicate also visually to our audience; in a way that appeals to the different senses. We offer something for the ears and eyes.
But the music is always at the centre. We create a scene around the compositions, all the other components such as our visuals, lighting design, dramaturgical effects, etc. then adapt to the character of each composition.
WHAT IS THE TARGET AUDIENCE OF YOUR CONCERT SHOW „TERWEYS VISUAL CLASSIC“?
We are very pleased that our classical concert show attracts not only a cross-generational audience, but also people who usually do not listen to classical music and then are enthralled by classical music.
DO YOU HAVE ANY SPECIAL ADVICE FOR YOUNG ARTISTS WHO WISH TO EXPLORE AND PUSH THE BOUNDARIES OF CLASSICAL CONCERTS?
Explore new things, interest yourself for fine arts, technology, sciences, cultures, and so on, exchange with others to broaden your horizon. Find your own style. Work professionally, be professional.
A SPECIAL QUESTION FOR PHILOMELA: HOW LIMITING, IF AT ALL, IS THE PIANO AS AN INSTRUMENT THAT REQUIRES A FIXED POSITION ON STAGE WHEN CREATING A VISUAL STAGE DESIGN?
It is no limit, but a challenge. It means that, as the very first step during a rehearsal on stage, we look for the optimal position of the grand piano, so that we have a good feeling for the acoustics and that the overall impression of the complete stage looks harmonic.
