Enjoy this week's Orange Twist with the truly outstanding and passionate conductor and composer from Puerto Rico, Ivan Enrique Rodriguez!

WE ALL KNOW HELLO STAGE’S FAVORITE COLOR! WHAT’S YOURS?

Well besides Hello Stage Orange, I’ve been always between Tyrian Purple, Royal Blue and Burgundy Red.

WHAT WAS THE BEST ADVICE A TEACHER EVER GAVE YOU?

A musical technical problem or difficulty is always solved by listening to the soul.

HOW HAS YOUR PRACTICE CHANGED WITH TIME?

As a composer and conductor, I would say that the word 'practice' would be roughly equivalent to the of study new music and new composition techniques.
So, if you ask me how has this changed with time, I would say that it is not so much about the 'change' with time, new techniques or new music, but instead it is rather about the overall concept of how to take these techniques and music in their constant evolution and enable them to continue to exist actively in society. In the path of my career, this has changed through time, as I continue to comprehend the ever-changing society’s needs in the musical realm and how society wants to relate to it, understand it, experience it and be part of it.

WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE MOST IMPORTANT TRAIT OF A SUCCESSFUL ARTIST IN TODAY’S MODERN WORLD

I believe that successful artists go further than just rehearsing and presenting on stage. An artist has the responsibility of giving justice to the art that is being performed. With music being the only art that exists only in the moment when it’s being played, that responsibility is even harder and more important. I strongly believe that an existing, understanding, art-inviting environment creates that special, almost magical ingredient that truly produces a transcendental musical artistic experience for musicians and audiences.
Once the artist understands that important fact, the other trait would be to immerse oneself in society. Yes, we also need to eat (although most of the time, budget can be a problem), but regardless of the barriers that materialistic remuneration may represent, a true successful artist performs his art out of commitment, responsibility and conviction that they have with art itself. Living and breathing art in that way is success!

HOW MUCH TIME DO YOU SPEND EVERY DAY ON FACEBOOK, TWITTER, AND WHICH OTHER WAYS DO YOU USE TO PROMOTE YOURSELF?

If I’m honest I do not spend too much time on social networks. Most of the time I am composing, studying scores, reading a good book or cooking. But when it comes to 'promoting myself' or as like to I see it, 'sharing my contributions to the world of music'. I mostly use Facebook, Twitter and obviously HELLO STAGE.
I do believe that in today’s modern world these social network tools are vital in the dissemination of music and the embracing of new audiences.

TELL US IVAN, WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON AT THE MOMENT? :)

Recently I finished Minotaurus, a Concerto for Violin and Orchestra based on the Greek myth of the Minotaur. I am now in the process of looking for the right violinist that could be a good fit for the concerto since it is a very demanding one. I also finished a piano trio called El Abrigo Negro (The Black Coat) based on the homonymous short story by the Russian author Lyudmila Petrushevskaya. With this piece I have been in correspondence with the Allant Trio for a possible premiere. I also composed a marimba solo piece called Estudio Insluso (Dull Etude), that has been under the eyes of Jane Boxall, the marimbist of the Ricochet Duo, for her consideration. I have also been in conversation with the Guidonian Hand Trombone Quartet for the possibility of the premiere of my trombone quartet Leyenda (Legend).

As a conductor I am currently in conversations with orchestras in South America and Europe for possible guest conducting invitations and I recently conducted the Grand Ballet Chamber Orchestra in Puerto Rico for the world premiere of the suite of the ballet Cecilia & Santiago by composer Johanny Navarro. Besides that I am always looking for ensembles and orchestras to collaborate with.
Ivan had the pleasure of listening to and meeting fellow HELLO STAGER's Ferhan & Ferzan Önder at their recent concert in Miami for LiVE - Connecting the World through Music, it's great to see our members connect!

DO YOU HAVE ANY SPECIAL HOBBIES?

Oh yes! I love to read books about philosophy and to cook fancy meals!
