Anne Wieben

This week we interviewed soprano Anne Wieben, one of our HELLO STAGE bloggers :)!

We all know HELLO STAGE’s favorite color! What’s yours?

I love to play with color and tend to gravitate towards sets of colors--orange and blue, pink and black, or green and purple. However, red is definitely my power color.

What was the best advice a teacher ever gave you?

When I was 18 and had just begun my studies, my first voice teacher asked me out of the blue "If you had to choose another career, what would it be?" I thought about it and told her the truth, "I have no Plan B; I'm going to be a singer." I will never forget her response: "Good. We can proceed." She was the first person to make me really think hard about the lifestyle of a career musician. Having a pretty voice and a love of singing is essential but not enough; you need to be tough, resilient, totally dedicated, and work like crazy to have a happy and successful career as a musician.

How has your practice changed with time?

I now have a great repertoire of exercises to help me overcome whatever difficulties present themselves on any given day. I also really, really enjoy my warm-ups and exercises and truly look forward to doing them daily. They are seriously fun!

What do you think is the most important trait of a successful artist in today’s modern world?

Tenacity paired with unwavering passion.

How much time do you spend every day on Facebook, Twitter, and any other ways promoting yourself?

I make a point of sitting down and devoting a solid, focused hour to professional social networking and emailing.

Anne - you are on the road a lot, find time to practice, blog for HELLO STAGE…any tips for us?

I have devised a daily "must-do" plan so I stay vocally fit as well as up to date and in touch. This includes pure vocal work, learning or reviewing repertoire, networking, and yoga. The length of time for each task varies depending on what I have going on and where I am, but I know I can do all of those things whether at home or in a hotel room.

Tell us about your upcoming projects :)

I will once again take the stage as Fiordiligi in a very exciting Cosi fan tutte project. We spent this past August living, rehearsing, and working with a group of Syrian refugees in Germany and the result is a truly moving and interesting production. We have already had 8 performances across Germany with 3 more in the works. Visit www.zufluchtkultur.de to learn more about it!
