It's time for an Orange Twist with a twist, as we talk to Wolfgang Laubichler, Managing Director of the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra...
We all know HELLO STAGE's favourite colour! What's yours?
Orange, what else! But immediately after orange
comes the fathomless red of a good Bordeaux wine.
When I think about what I have just written it is actually
the other way round…
Did you study an instrument before you decided to pursue a career in music management?
Yes, I studied piano and worked as a piano teacher.
What was the best advice a teacher ever gave you?
Stop playing the piano.
How much time do you spend listening to artists you have not heard before, on CD, in concert, or on the internet?
Not that much as I am only interested in a certain type of artist for my orchestra. I need to have heard about an artist before I listen to him or her.
hat do you think is the most important trait of a
successful artist in today’s modern world?
One could have the impression that it is absolutely necessary to be physically attractive and to have an amazing technique.
The rest is marketing…
What can you tell us about your instrument - the Stuttgarter Kammerorchester?
It is one of the best string orchestras in the world.
We will continue the tradition of the orchestra with
baroque music and “Wiener Klassik” by inviting people
from the Early Music scene and will do more and more contemporary
music by commissioning new works for string orchestra.
Which upcoming orchestra project are you looking forward to the most?
At the moment I look forward to a concert with Fabio Biondi.
One of the most interesting upcoming projects next year is a
concert with Titus Engel in which only arrangements for strings
or small orchestra will be performed: Wagner’s Tristan Vorspiel
, Berg’s Lyrische Suite
and Mahler’s 1st Symphony
What joke makes you laugh?
It is not a joke but I would say the beginning of “A night at the Opera” with the Marx Brothers.
A perfect lesson how to deal with patrons…
