biography
The young early keyboard specialist Zsombor Tóth-Vajna is one of the leading figures of the young music generation of Hungary. He was born in Miskolc. He studied harpsichord at the Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music with Miklós Spányi where he graduated with the highest honours, and organ at the University of Miskolc in his native city with László Varga. He continued his studies at the Sweelinck Conservatory (Conservatorium van Amsterdam) in Amsterdam with Jacques van Oortmerssen (organ), Menno van Delft (clavichord, harpsichord) and Richard Egarr (harpsichord, fortepiano).
He also holds a degree in general medicine from the Semmelweis University, Budapest.
He has given concerts in many European countries as a soloist on four historical keyboard instruments (organ, harpsichord, fortepiano, clavichord) as well as playing continuo with various chamber music groups and orchestras. He has been artistic director of the hungarian baroque orchestra Musica Florens in Budapest since its foundation in 2012, and founder of the Piano e Forte Duo with his twin brother, Gergely, and founder of the international chamber orchestra, called Harmonia Caelestis. He has recorded for the Hungarian Radio as a soloist and as a chamber music player.
For some years Zsombor Tóth-Vajna is making a research on early hungarian keyboard music, and researches on the effect of music therapy.
He was participant in masterclasses with Pierre Hantai, Skip Sempé, Ton Koopman, Masaaki Suzuki, Malcolm Bilson, Lorenzo Ghielmi, Christine Schornsheim and Hans Fagius.
As an organ player he played several major historical organ such as the famous Christian Müller organ in St. Bavo Haarlem, the „Bach Organ” in the Thomaskirche Leipzig, such as the magnificent Schnither organs in Hamburg and Alkmaar. As a harpsichord player he worked with important conductors, Sigiswald Kuijken and Richard Egarr.
He was awarded with the Kerpel-Fronius prize in 2013 and selected between the „50 most talented young hungarian” program in 2015. He is member of the Hungarian Bach Society, Boston Clavichord Society and the Dutch Clavichord Society.
