Vienna born Sascha Goetzel is Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the Borusan Istanbul Philharmonic Orchestra, and has achieved high artistic standards and international recognition for this exceptional body of musicians. He is Principal Guest Conductor of the Orchestre Symphonique de Bretagne and the Kanagawa Philharmonic Orchestra in Japan. After a six year tenure of the music directorship of the Kuopio Symphony in Finland he remains a regular guest with the orchestra.
Goetzel began his orchestral career working at close quarters with some of the world's greatest conductors such as Zubin Mehta, Riccardo Muti and Seiji Ozawa. He has made successful debuts with numerous Austrian orchestras, and is invited to conduct productions of the Vienna State Opera. He has conducted the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Berlin Symphony Orchestra, Luxembourg Philharmonic, NDR Hannover, NHK Symphony, Shanghai Symphony, Moscow Symphony, the Philharmonic Orchestras of Tokyo, Sapporo and Nagoya, Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz, the Dutch Gelders Orchester, the Symphony Orchestras of Baltimore, Basel, Helsingborg and Toronto, the Orchestre National des Pays de la Loire and many others in a wide spectrum of repertoire, including several world premieres.He has worked with prominent instrumentalists such as Murray Perahia, Rudolf Buchbinder, Vadim Repin, Martin Grubinger, Hilary Hahn and Branford Marsalis.
Sascha Goetzel has to his credit acclaimed new productions of the Mozart Da Ponte operas and La Bohème at the Tiroler Landestheater. Valery Gergiev invited him to conduct Don Giovanni at the legendary Mariinsky Theater; he conducted Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker at the Vienna State Opera, and in 2010 a new production of The Magic Flute in Lucerne. At Vienna's Volksoper he conducted new productions of Lehár's Land of Smiles, Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro,Entführung aus dem Serail and Nicolai's The Merry Wives of Windsor which he directed in the Volksoper's tour of Japan. Last year he conducted a splendid new production of Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro featuring costumes by Jean-Paul Gaultier at the Opéra de Montpellier; in Istanbul he has presented concert performances of many operas. He has worked with world class singers such as Placido Domingo, José Carreras, Anna Netrebko, Angela Denoke, Renée Fleming, José Cura, Joseph Calleja, Piotr Beczala, Thomas Hampson, Roberto Alagna, Michael Schade, Bo Skovhus and Vesselina Kasarova.
His spectacular work with the Borusan Istanbul Philharmonic Orchestra has been documented in two CDs released by Onyx. The first featured orchestral works by Respighi, Hindemith and Florent Schmitt, the second is entitled Music from the Machine Age, and both received superb reviews. A third recording is in preparation and will be released later this year.
In the current season Sascha Goetzel conducts concerts with the Orchestre de Bretagne, the Orchestre de Bordeaux, Orchestre Philharmonique de Strasbourg, Kanagawa Philharmonic, the Romanian National Radio Orchestra, the Dresden Philharmonic, with a week long Beethovenfest in Istanbul and a concert performance of Verdi' s Tosca his Borusan Istanbul Philharmonic. Other highlights include a new production of Rigoletto in Rennes, a performance with the Vienna State Opera of Mozart's Entführung aus dem Serail in Ljubljana, and a recording with the Orchestre de Chambre de Paris. In November 2014 Sascha Goetzel conducts a series of performances of Le Nozze di Figaro at the Vienna State Opera.
