biography

Manuel Hofstätter was born in Schlierbach, Austria, in 1986. He received his first percussion- and piano lessons at the age of six.
From 2004 to 2009 he studied at the Linz Private Bruckner University under the tutelage of Leonhard Schmidinger (timpani and percussion) and Bogdan Bacanu (marimba).

From 2006 to 2009 he worked as timpanist and percussionist with the Linz Bruckner Orchestra. He earned rave reviews for his appearance as soloist in Werner Thärichen´s Timpani Concerto and, together with Leonhard Schmidinger, performed the Austrian premiere of Philipp Glass´s "Concerto for Two Timpanists and Orchestra" under the baton of Dennis Russell Davies.

Manuel Hofstätter has been a member of Martin Grubinger's percussion ensemble since 2007, performing at the Schleswig–Holstein Music Festival and the Salzburg Festival to mention but a few. In 2009, Manuel went about composing a percussion solo for Gershwin's "Porgy & Bess" from a sketch in the 1935 original score. Following this, a recording of Gershwin's opera was made in cooperation with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe under the baton of Nikolaus Harnoncourt.

Manuel now resides in Bergen, Norway, where he works as the assistant principal timpanist and percussionist of the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra. In addition, he performs with orchestras such as NDR Radiophilharmonie Hannover, Hamburger Philharmoniker, Chamber Orchestra of Europe, Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen and the Norwegian Chamber Orchestra, both as orchestra member and as soloist.

Manuel Hofstätter is guest teacher for timpani and percussion at the universities of Bergen and Stavanger.
