Konstantia Gourzi

conductor, composer
About

Konstantia Gourzi is a rarity amongst classical musicians often being both the composer and the conductor of a concert. In August 2016 she conducted the premiere of her piece Ny-él, Two Angels in the White Garden at the Lucerne Festival, a festival commission.

Her artistic aim is to create connections between traditional and contemporary sounds in her compositions and as a creator by putting new emphasis on programming conceptually.

She has composed opera, film music, works for theatre and orchestra as well as numerous solo pieces and chamber music. Her music has been commissioned by Deutsche Staatsoper Berlin, Lucerne Festival, hr-Sinfonieorchester, Bayerischer Rundfunk, Nils Mönkemeyer, François Leleux, the Heath, Minguet and Signum Quartets to name just a few.
Always searching for new ways of presenting contemporary music, Konstantia – like her mentor Claudio Abbado – has founded several ensembles and concert series.

At the end of 2014 ECM released her debut Album Music for String Quartet and Piano that received the highest critical acclaim.

Since April 2017 Konstantia Gourzi has been Composer in Residence at the International House of Artists Villa Concordia in Bamberg, Germany.

Konstantia Gourzi: flying carpet 2013 - Odyssey (Trailer)
THE OPERA FLYING CARPET 2013
Konstantia Gourzi invited three composers to engage with three themes of The Odyssey: migration – integration; victory – defeat - aspiration; victory - hubris – defeat - homecoming.
Flying Carpet’s concept also seeks to promote cultural understanding. It is important to Konstantia Gourzi that the composers all have a connection to The Odyssey, in that they bring together the principal cultures of the Eastern Mediterranean. These are:
*       Turkey/the Ottoman Empire, represented by Sinem Altan, who was born in Ankara (Turkey) in 1985
*       Judaism, represented by Amos Elkana (b. 1967), who lives in Tel Aviv (Israel)
*       Greece, represented by Giorgos Koumendakis (b. 1959), who lives and works in Athens.

The great awakening occurred with the orchestra of the Lucerne Festival Academy, directed by the conductor and composer Konstantia Gourzi (54). In "Le Sacrifice" by Iannis Xenakis she brought out sharp shafts of sound, calculated to slay the mythical bull to whom the work is dedicated. After that we were able to relax in Per Nørgård's "Voyage into the Golden Screen" where trance-like effects were achieved with tiny sound displacements. In György Ligeti's "Concert Romanesc" the orchestra moved virtuosically between fiery dance rhythms and mountain idylls evoked by horn motifs.

The high point was heralded as Gourzi's new work entitled "Ny-él, Two Angels in the White Garden". This is part of a series of compositions devoted to angels by the Greek-born composer, who now lives in Munich. At the premiere, conducted by Gourzi herself, the many archaic rhythms and wistful wind melodies were striking. In between, there were repeated disruptive sound effects until the orchestra reached an idiosyncratic shimmering sound in the last movement.
