Ilia Korol (Violin, Viola, Conductor)
Born in Kiev / Ukraine, violinist, violist and conductor, Ilia Korol is an internationally
acclaimed artist. He comes from Kiev, studied first at the Moscow Conservatory
College and then at the Moscow Conservatory. Abraham Stern, Gelya Dubrova and
Marina Iashvili were his professors. In addition to his education with a focus on the
Romantic and Modern repertoire, he began early specializing in the old music and
historical performance practice.
He lives in Austria since 1997, where he received Austrian citizenship in 2001 for his
He played with orchestras such as the Musica Antiqua Köln, with which he was in
2006 as a "guest leader" on a U.S. tour, in places like Carnegie Hall in New York, the
Disney Hall Los Angeles, Berkeley, Santa Barbara and Santa Monica.
Ilia Korol worke as a concertmaster and a soloist of different orchestras: the Vienna
Academy, the Musica Angelica L.A (United States), the Bach Ensemble by Joshua
Rifkin , Freitag Akedemie Bern, the Spanish Baroque Orchestra RCOC. He was also a
member of the ensemble Ars Antiqua Austria and the Clemencic Consort.
2003 Ilia Korol and Julia Moretti founded the chamber orchestra moderntimes1800,
which he directed at the RuhrTriennale Festival, the Salzburg Festspiele Festival,
in the Theatre an der Wien, at the Vienna Konzerthaus, at the Rheingau Music
Festival, at the Innsbruck Festwochen Festival, the Wiener Festwochen Festival,
La Chaise Dieu Festival and Handel Festspielen Halle and with which he has
appeared on numerous international festivals and concert halls at home and abroad
with great success.
Over the years famous conductors and soloist worked with moderntimes1800
including Reinhard Goebel, René Jacobs, Daniel Reuss, Michael Schade, Anna
Prohaska, Karina Gauvin, Daniel Taylor, Juliane Banse, Patricia Petibon, Simone
Kermes, Vivica Genaux, Christoph and Julian Prégardien, Max Emanuel Cencic , Larry
Zazzo ,Florian Bosch and many others.
Numerous CD recordings attest his lively chamber music activities as well. His last CD
publications in this area are the first recording of Brahms violin sonatas on historical
instruments with Natalia Grigorieva (CD of the month and the year of 'music web
The world premiere recording of violin sonatas by George Onslow with Norbert
Zeilberger was awarded a Diapason d'Or and was enthusiastically received by the
press. Also, the 2008 released CD "Sinfonias from the Enlightenment" with
moderntimes_1800 was awarded a Diapason d'Or.
As a passionate teacher, Ilia Korol has led and is still leading numerous masterclasses
at the Academy of Performing Arts in Vienna, at the Moscow Conservatory, at the
Belgrade Music Academy, in Gmunden Austria Baroque Academy, at the Innsbruck
Festival at UCLA and Los Angeles, Mexico, Costa Rica and so on.
From 2008 to 2010 Ilia Korol was a teacher in early music education course at the
University Mozarteum Salzburg, Innsbruck. Some of his students have become
internationally renowned artists.
