biography

Gustavo Castillo is a young baritone born in Barquisimeto, Venezuela. He started his musical studies at “El Sistema” (A Venezuelan music education program founded in 1975 by José Antonio Abreu) guided by tenor Ídwer Álvarez, who infused him with a passion not only for opera but also for chamber music, the oratorio, and choral symphonies. He has performed the baritone soloist role in the requiems of W. A. Mozart, Anton Faist, Maurice Duruflé and Gabriel Fauré, as well as other works like Mozart’s “Coronation Mass”, Bach’s “Magnificat”, Kodály’s “Missa Brevis”, Charles Villiers Stanford’s “Mass in G major”, Beethoven’s “Symphony No. 9 in D minor”, Orff’s “Carmina Burana” and Antonio Estévez’ “Cantata Criolla”. He has given concerts under renowned conductors in Venezuela and abroad such as Andrea Brown, Gustavo Dudamel, Rodolfo Saglimbeni, Vincent Heitzer, Nello Santi, Myun-Whun Chung, Pietro Mianiti, Raúl Aquiles Delgado Estévez, Sergio Rosales, Robert Göstl, Luís Miguel González, César Iván Lara, Marco Guidarini and Evelino Pidò. He debuted at the age of 25 with the role of Shaunard in Puccini’s “La bohème”. Afterward followed other Puccini roles like Sharpless in “Madama Butterfly”, Sacristan in Tosca and Mandarino in “Turandot”. Other roles include Valentin in Diana Daniele’s “Faust”, Belcore in Donizetti’s “L’elisir d’amore” and Dandini in “Cenerentola per i bambini”, an adaptation by Alexander Krampe of Rossini’s work. In summer 2017, he will premiere the role of Vater in Humperdinck’s “Hänsel und Gretel” at the opera season 2016-2017 at Teatro alla Scala. Since 2016, he takes part at the Accademia alla Scala lyric opera formation program in Milan, his current place of residence.
