The Georgian-German pianist Catherine Gordeladze has established herself as one of the younger generation's most remarkable musicians; the Zeitung fürs Dresdner Land writes of the "instinctive sureness and elegance" of her playing, and the Darmstädter Echo praises her "unmistakably individual per- forming style", in a broad repertoire that ranges from Bach and Haydn via Chopin to Ravel, Ligeti and Kapustin. Her ability to set unexpected and per- sonal accents in every work and her particular talent, which blends bravura playing, poetic finesse and outstanding virtuoso skill, are described by the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung as follows: "She is generous; as the glittering notes rattle from her fingers in fast runs she fashions them into strings of pearls.... Or her fingers release virtuoso sequences of ornaments, chromatic strings of pearls and lightning arpeggios - like a somersaulting Puck figure racing through its midsummer night's dream."
Her recent Album „American Rhapsody" by ANTES EDITION won a silver and a bronze medal at the Global Music Awards 2014, USA and was recom- mended as CD TIPP by Radio hr2 kultur and klassik. com. The international music critics were lavish in their praise: „Catherine Gordeladze is an impres- sive performer in this program of pure, unadulterated pleasure" (Pizzicato Magazine, Luxembourg); „Her playing is delightful" (Fanfare Music Magazine,USA).
Her CD of works by the Russian composer Nikolai Kapustin, described by Pi- ano News as a "grandiose" recording, was released on Naxos in 2011. CD TIPP on Radio Bremen said: "Highly virtuosic and with a keen sense of timing and rhythmic detail... Catherine Gordeladze's new recording offers truly great piano playing"
The leading Spanish music journal RITMO selected this CD in its Top Ten CD list in March 2012 alongside CDs by Daniel Barenboim, Anna Netrebko and Elena Garanca. In the USA, too, it was acclaimed in the leading Fanfare Mu- sic Magazine ("This CD is a must-have") and the American Record Guide de- scribed it as superlative in every way. It achieved eighth place in Naxos's top bestseller list for three consecutive months.
An outstanding soloist who is also much in demand with chamber music en- sembles, Catherine Gordeladze's engagements have included solo appearances in many important concert venues such as the Kurhaus Wiesbaden in its Mozart Society series, the lunchtime concerts of Hessische Rundfunk, the Gasteig cultural centre (Munich) in the "Winners and Masters " series, the Liszt Salon Weimar, the Chopin House Valldemossa on Mallorca, the Orangerie Darmstadt, the Kurtheater Bad Homburg, Schloss Belvedere Weimar. She has also given chamber music recitals among others with the cellist Daniel Müller-Schott and the violinist David Garrett.
She has made numerous radio or TV broadcasts in Georgia, in the former Soviet Union, in the Czech Republic (Radio Free Europe from Prague) and on radio and TV stations all over Germany. She has also been heard on BBC Radio 3 and on classical radio stations in Switzerland, Luxembourg, New Zealand, Mexico, Australia, Hong Kong and USA.
She has won several international competitions: the VI International Chopin Piano Competition in Darmstadt, the IV International Music Festival in Dietzenbach, the "Prix d'Honneur" and a medal from the world-fa- mous Légion d'Honneur in 2002, and the Swiss Prize in 2003 in the noted masterclasses by Alexis Weissenberg in Engelberg in the Swiss Alps. In 2005 she received a special award to honour her achievement as an outstanding pianist. The prize will be conferred by the Cultural Fund of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, which exists to support major talents in different disciplines.
Her debut CD, "Hommage à Haydn", by Ars Musici, was released in 2007. Piano News enthused: "What she conjures up from the keyboard is a verita- ble flood of intellectually profound and beautifully shaped explorations of sound which reveal the inexhaustible inventiveness of the doyen of Viennese Classicism. Gordeladze penetrates to the heart of a wide variety of music with naturalness and mellifluous piano technique. This CD both rehabilitates Haydn's piano sonatas and enriches them."
Catherine Gordeladze started learning the piano at the age of six at the Tbilisi Central Music School. Celebrated as a child prodigy, she made her debut with a symphony orchestra when aged seven with the Georgia Philharmonic, and gave her first piano recital when ten years old. In the following year she took part in a gala anniversary concert in the presence of former Georgian presi- dent Edvard Shevardnadze in Tbilisi opera house which was broadcast live on television throughout the former Soviet Union. She received her musical training at the Tbilisi State conservatory, the University of Music and Perform- ing Arts at Frankfurt/Main and the Academy of Music Franz Liszt at Weimar, graduating with a concert artist diploma. Becoming a pupil of Maestro Alexis Weissenberg and benefiting from his teaching over a long period has significantly influenced her artistic development.
In addition to performing as a soloist, Catherine Gordeladze teaches at the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Frankfurt.
